MinIONs are pocket-size devices for sequencing DNA. Computer scientists typically view DNA sequencing as a process of obtaining a string over an alphabet {A,C,G,T} from a biological sample. In this talk, I will illustrate on several examples that it is also beneficial to investigate raw electrical signals produced by MinIONs and that these data can be a source of many interesting computer science problems with practical applications. This research was done with Vladimir Boza, Rastislav Rabatin, Eduard Batmendijn, and Brona Brejova.

Dr. Tomas Vinar is an associate professor at the Comenius University in Bratislava. He received his PhD. in 2007 from the School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo in Canada and he spent two years as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Biological Statistics and Computational Biology at Cornell University. He contributed to several high-profile international projects, including consortia sequencing genomes of macaque, marmoset, and panda. His area of research is bioinformatics.
