IIIS 2013 Physics Undergraduate Students Summer School took place at Tsinghua Xuetang on May 18th-19th, 2013, with 46 third-year students from dozens of universities like Tsinghua University, Peking University, China’s Science and Technology University, Zhejiang University, Fudan University attending. IIIS Dean Prof. Andrew Chi-Chih Yao made the opening address, Prof. Luming Duan hosted the opening ceremony and gave the first lecture.

In the opening remarks, Prof. Andrew Chi-Chih Yao introduced the internationalized faculty team and international exchanges of IIIS, highlighting the development of quantum information science. He pointed out that as a cutting-edge science, quantum information had great potential and would play an indispensible role in the future. He also introduced the superconducting laboratory which is still under construction, encouraging students to get involved in the research actively. At last, Prof. Yao wished students could benefit from this Summer School and enjoy themselves here.

Prof. Luming Duan gave the opening talk entitled “Introduction to Frontier of Quantum Information”. Starting from the famous Einstein and Bohr debate, he explored the correlation between Quantum Information and ERP Paradox, and introduced several key research directions such as quantum cryptography, quantum network, quantum simulation, quantum computing and so on. In addition, taking the invention of computer and transistor as examples, he expressed his confidence in the future development and wide application of quantum computer.

IIIS Associate Professor Prof. Giulio Chiribella, Prof. Kihwan Kim, Prof. Luyan Sun, Assistant Professor Prof. Xiongfeng Ma, Prof. Mile Gu shared with the students their own research interests respectively, and discussed with students on various research directions. After the talks, led by Dr. Zhangqi Yin, students visited the laboratory of Center for Quantum Information (CQI), which further enhanced their research interest and passion for scientific research.

With the interesting introduction of IIIS, inspiring talks and academic communication between students and advisors, the summer school not only provides an opportunity for students to feel the academic tradition of centenary Tsinghua, but also helps them to get a more clear idea on their research interests and future plans.
